EIC Activities has been engaged to provide geotechnical, tunnelling and structures design and assessment services to Suburban Connect, the consortium delivering the Tunnels South contract as part of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East.
About the project
As member of Suburban Connect, CPB Contractors is part of the team building the southern section of tunnels for SRL East in Victoria.
SRL East will deliver six new underground stations connected by 26 kilometres of twin tunnels, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other.
The Tunnels South contract includes 16kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley (which will be Victoria’s longest tunnels), 54 cross passages, two tunnel portal structures, a stabling yard and two station box excavations at Clayton and Monash. Tunnel boring machines will be launched from Clarinda.
EIC Activities' involvement
EIC Activities was engaged from concept stage to detailed design stage to deliver geotechnical, tunnels and structures design works supporting the project including:
- design of the precast concrete segmental lining for the twin tunnels (15.5km each tunnel x 2 tunnels (“up” and “down” tracks))
- design of permanent concrete lining for connecting cross passages between the twin tunnels – a total of 54 cross passages
- assessment of face pressure and face stability for the tunnel boring machine operation during construction
- design of two tunnel boring machine launch shafts at Clarinda
- design of temporary works for tunnel boring machine launching and retrieval
- impact assessment on the Melbourne Water South East Trunk Sewer
- design of the permanent cut and cover concrete tunnel, connecting the tunnels at the Clarinda site.

EIC Activities is working with fellow Group companies to support the project including:
- CPB Contractors (main contractor as part of Suburban Connect)
- Leighton Asia’s OneDCS for Digital, BIM and drafting services
- HOCHTIEF Engineering for technical review of critical design elements
- IDD Tech Pty Ltd's ToBe Builder has been used for the project to undertake 4D modelling including for the tunnel boring machine launch operations.
