EIC Activities Technical Principal Jawad Zeerak recently presented a technical paper at the 2026 joint conference of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and the Piling and Foundation Specialists Federation (PFSF) in Sydney, demonstrating how advanced engineering analysis and construction expertise can be combined to address complex foundation challenges.
The paper, Pile Driving in Soft Ground: Measures to Mitigate Impact on Existing Infrastructure, examins the impacts of pile driving in soft ground conditions and explored methods to reduce risks to surrounding infrastructure.
Developed in collaboration with CPB Contractors, the research brought together advanced finite element modelling, field trials and construction monitoring to improve understanding of lateral ground movements and validate mitigation measures.
According to Jawad Zeerak, working closely with CPB Contractors strengthened the technical outcomes of the research by providing valuable real-world data and project insights.
"Working alongside CPB colleagues enabled EIC to move beyond purely theoretical modelling and validate model predictions with construction feedback and site trials," Jawad said.
"CPB organised and managed field trials and monitoring, allowing the modelling to be calibrated against actual pile-driving behaviour in soft ground conditions and resulting in more realistic predictions of lateral ground movements."
A key aspect of the study was the use of inclinometer monitoring and construction data collected during full-scale pile-driving trials. This information was used to calibrate and refine PLAXIS 3D finite element models, helping ensure predicted ground movements accurately reflected observed field performance.
Jawad said the collaboration created a continuous cycle of prediction, construction, monitoring and verification.
"Because the findings were supported by measured field responses rather than modelling alone, the team could demonstrate that the conclusions and mitigation measures were evidence-based and reliable."
The project highlights the importance of collaboration between technical specialists and project delivery teams when addressing complex engineering problems.
"Technical specialists contribute analytical tools and geotechnical expertise, while project delivery teams provide practical knowledge of construction methods, equipment limitations, site constraints, trials and monitoring," Jawad said.
"When these two are combined, the result is often a solution that is both technically sound and practically buildable."
Jawad noted that the project is a strong example of the unique advantage offered through collaboration across the CIMIC Group, where specialist technical capability and experienced construction delivery teams work together to solve complex challenges.
The research findings contribute valuable, evidence-based insights that can help inform future projects facing similar geotechnical challenges and support the advancement of industry best practice.
